How can I be sure I am paying rent to the owner of this home?

I've heard how cautious new home owners/renters should be due to fraud in real estate. Where can I verify the home I am moving into actually belongs to the person that walked me through it? Who should I contact locally to determine the landlord giving me this lease is the actual owner, before I issue a cashier's check in their name?
